According to a new study, drinking pro
tein drinks with leftover milk or yogurt
can help diabetics control their blood sugar levels.
According to the foreign news agency, scientists believe that these drinks slow down the rapid process of digestion of food and activate hormones to prevent rapidly rising sugar levels.
In a study conducted at the University of Newcastle, people with type 2 diabetes drank a low-protein drink containing leftover milk or yogurt before a meal. Participants in the study were observed for one week in their normal lives.
The same participants were then fed a protein-free drink the following week and later had their blood tested to assess both conditions. Test results showed that blood glucose levels were better controlled due to the protein taken before meals.
Dr Daniel West of the University of Newcastle's Diabetes Research Group said that this ability of the diet was known for the first time since a few hours of previous research in the lab showed that people had observed in normal life.
He said that researchers believe that this protein works in two ways. One is by slowing down the digestive system and the other is by activating several important hormones that prevent blood sugar levels from rising.
