Folic acid supplementation should be made mandatory worldwide, medical experts say - Health-Teachers

Doctors and scientists have called for a global resolution to make folic acid compulsory. Its details have been published in the international journal Lancet as a research paper commissioned by the Emory Institute, the G4 Alliance, and the Global Spina Bifida Foundation.

If women consume folic acid during pregnancy, it benefits both mother and child. On the one hand, the process of head reduction in children is reduced and spinal cord defects are also removed. 30 years of research has shown that folic acid tablets are completely safe and only 60 countries have added it to flour, corn and rice.

Several organizations have urged the World Health Assembly, held on the sidelines of the World Economic Conference, to act immediately and legislate widely on folic acid-containing foods under a global resolution.

Only 25 percent of the world's population has access to folic acid, said Dr. Vijay Kancharela of the Emory Institute. Folic acid protects against the dreaded disease spina bifida and can correct skull defects in children around the world. According to him, a global resolution and effort can have global benefits. It will also help in achieving the United Nations Goals or SGDs.
