Sales of tomatoes that cure mental illnesses in Japan

Tomatoes are being sold in Japan which are claimed to reduce blood pressure, help with good sleep and relieve anxiety.

These tomatoes have been developed by a Japanese biotechnology company 'Sinatech Seed' with the help of the latest genetic engineering technique 'Crisper'.

They naturally contain a substance called 'gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) which lowers blood pressure and calms the nerves.

In Japan, GABA is sold as a popular health supplement. It is like vitamin C. That's why we chose it as the first target for our genome-editing technology,” said Hiroshi Azura, chief technology officer of Suntec Seed, also a plant molecular biologist at the University of Tsukuba, Japan.

However, the reporter of 'Nature Biotechnology', Emily Waltz, expressed doubts in recent news and wrote that this claim is being made based on two research conducted in 2003 and 2009, respectively, which are reliable. It's difficult.

It should be noted that 'Gaba tomatoes' were approved for sale in Japan in 2020, while their sale also started there a few months ago.

'Sinatech Seed' has now started selling these tomatoes too so that local farmers can grow them on a large scale and earn more profit.

Despite the technical skepticism, 'Gaba Tomatoes' has received a lot of positive feedback in Japan. However, it is yet to be decided from a research point of view.
